This … AGAIN?  Greenville County Councilman Curt McGahhey, District 21, (HERE), who was elected in November 2024 on a platform opposing the 2024 “Penny” Tax and to replace long term County Administrator Joe Kernell (who in January 2026 Councilman McGahhey voted to extend Mr. Kernell’s contract for an additional 18 months – until July 2027) … has now proposed a NEW “Penny” Tax for roads.

This “Penny” Tax would raise $120 MILLION from Greenville Citizens … but in exchange Councilman McGahhey proposes we eliminate the $25 / vehicle tax (totalling $14 million in each year).  So taxpayers are saddled with an additional $120 MILLION in taxes in exchange for a $14 million cut.

We believe in REFORM first, cleaning the “Waste, Fraud & Abuse” out of our current nearly $500 MILLION County Budget, then we can talk about additional tax revenue.  There is no discussion of cutting the fat, just adding more taxes.

Citizens “replaced” former long term Greenville County County Counselman Butch Kirven in the June 2024 Republican Primary with Mr. McGahhey BECAUSE Councilman Kirven had simply raised our taxes.  It now appears Mr. McGahhey is doing the same thing.

The Greenvillle County Republican could not be more disappointed in this proposed tax and will unite with Greenville Citizens to once again FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT this newly proposed Curt McGahhey “Penny” Tax.

NOTE … it is NEVER just a “Penny”.

NOVEMBER 2024 “Penny” Tax – DEFEATED!!!

2024 Capital Project Sales Tax Referendum – VOTE NO

Greenville, SC / October 11, 2024 — South Carolina’s Greenville County Republican Party (GCRP) says voters are being misled by the
upcoming vote for more taxes, and should vote a resounding NO. The ballot item, called ‘Capital Project’ Sales Tax Referendum was put on the November ballots by Greenville County Council members, including several councilmen who were since voted out of office in the June Republican primary.

Greenville County voters already pay for road repairs and the money can’t be used for cleanup from Hurricane Helene. The referendum also presents many unanswered questons which could prove even more costly to taxpayers. Thus, GCRP agrees with Councilman Benton Blount’s view as expressed in his Substack (bentonblount.substack.com) dated August 3, 2024, that “voting against this tax might be the only way to ensure we get a more responsible and well-rounded proposal in the future…..”

In November, Greenville County voters will be asked, on their ballot:

The Greenville County Republican Party agrees with the reasoning provided by Councilman Benton Blount that the answer to this question should be NO for several reasons:

  • Over 30% of paving projects are CUL-DE-SACS
  • Over 31% of the paving mileage are STATE ROADS
  • Guarantee of reimbursement from the State = ZERO
  • Resurfacing roads such as Salters Rd, that was built just over 2 YEARS AGO
  • Handles road congesƟon by DECREASING lanes on Wade Hampton
  • It requires new County Budget line items to create a new department to handle the projects. The
department CANNOT BE FUNDED WITH SALES TAX.

“As part of its mission to educate voters, the GCRP has launched a website about this particular referendum,” says GCRP Chair Yvonne Julian. “You can read more at NoPennyTax.com, and we encourage you to share it widely.”
