Greenville, SC (June 20, 2023) – Tonight, the Greenville County Council convened in County chambers to present a third reading of the 2023-2025 budget. The chamber was filled with concerned citizens (many if not most, of whom were actually county employees) an hour prior to the start of the meeting. A super majority of 8 votes was needed to pass the budget. The budget proposal that included a major tax increase failed with a 6-6 vote.
The Greenville County Republican Party (GCRP) wants to shout out a big “thank you” to the many Precinct leaders and members who united in the mission of contacting their respective council members, holding them accountable to follow the Republican platform, and telling them any tax increase is not acceptable. We will remain united in the mission to fight for transparency in all county expenditures.
We wish to thank the six council members who voted NO, keeping their conservative values and the promises they campaigned on. In their vote, they represented the taxpayer and the county employees
as well. The following members were NO votes:
District 22 – Tzouvelekas
District 20 – Shaw
District 19 – Blount
District 17 – Russo
District 26 – Bradley
District 24 – Seman (Councilwoman Seman was clear on her support for the budget as written along with the tax increase proposal and her “no” vote seemed to be purely strategic. As a “member” of the prevailing side, we are told Mrs. Seman will have an option to move for the Council to reconsider the vote.)
In conclusion, while the outcome of tonight’s county council vote was a success for the people, we will be diligent in watching their future moves toward a budget of which the people approve, while encouraging the council members to follow a transparent and open decision making process. We must let them know we are watching and will not stand for the mismanagement of our tax dollars.
